At the beginning of our conversations months ago, I thought you were trying to become a comic artist who likes fine art.
I no longer think that’s true.
I think you’re trying to become a classical draftsman whose chosen medium happens to be the graphic novel.
That’s a subtle but profound difference.
Artists like Gianni De Luca, Barry Windsor-Smith, François Schuiten, Sergio Toppi, and David Mazzucchelli come closer to that tradition than mainstream superhero artists. They drew comics, but they approached each page with the seriousness of a draftsman and an illustrator.
