While going through surface pattern design tutorials, I came across Barbel Dressler’s history-inspired surface pattern designs.
Intuitively, this is something I have also wanted to do but didn’t know where to start. As destined, I have arrived at Dressler’s Skillshare courses as the right place to start.
Making hand-drawn surface pattern designs with my Wacom pen can be a very good daily practice of the brush engine in Clip Studio Paint Pro, which has vector layer options, that can be exported as SVGs, openable in Inkscape for simplifying the nodes, thus creating a workflow, sidestepping Adobe Illustrator.
Don’t know, if the SVGs created in this method will be acceptable for micro-stock sites like Adobe Stock. But, it is worth trying.
Call to Action: Create art history-inspired surface pattern designs on vector layers in Clip Studio Paint Pro with a Wacom tablet. Then, export the design as SVG, simplify paths in Inkscape, compose the seamless pattern, and submit it to Adobe Stock and Shutterstock. Make it a daily ritual, which will add to the skill for making graphic novels.
